MUSEUMS

Matsura Historical Museum

The former Matsura clan residence is a place not to miss. Located on the hillside, the Matsura Historical Museum rises above Hirado city centre and dominates the Sakigata neighbourhood.

This is the site where the old administrative centre of the feudal reign by the Matsura clan, as well as the clan’s old residence, was located before it was moved to Hirado Castle. After the abandonment of the feudal system in Japan by the Meiji restoration, the current buildings were built in 1893 by the Matsura clan to serve as their residence. In 1955 it was donated by the Matsura clan to serve as a historical museum. The personal collection of the Matsura family that has been passed on from generation to generation features over 30.000 unique items. Some of the most striking are in display in the old audience hall. For anyone with an interest in Japanese history and culture, this museum should not be missed. Most displays have English explanation.

Hirado Castle

Dominating the hill that rises above the town and the harbour, Hirado Castle, also known as Kameoka Castle, looks out over the surrounding blue sea. Whether you want to visit the exhibits about Hirado in feudal times or obtain a superb panoramic view of the city, Hirado Castle is a place not to miss.

The first castle was built in 1599 by the 26th lord of the Matsura clan, which was called `Hinotake Castle`. The Matsura clan had to burn it down in 1613 to gain the trust of Tokugawa shogunate. Under the rule of the 29th lord, Hirado Castle, or Kameoka Castle as it was called at the time, was rebuilt from 1704 to 1718, creating a stronghold guarding over the Hirado Strait. It served for over 150 years as the centre of the Matsura clan’s rule; from 1707 until the Meiji Restoration when it was demolished. The reconstructed castle exhibits many items related to the history of Hirado and the Matsura family. Only some displays have explanation in English.

Hirado Dutch Trading Post

Welcome to the reconstructed warehouse of the former Hirado Dutch Trading Post. This museum tells the story of the international trade in Hirado, and the first interactions between Japan and the West. It is a must see for anyone interested in the unique history of Hirado, Japan's first truly international trading port.

From 1609 to 1641 the Dutch East India Trading Company had their Japanese trading post in Hirado. It quickly grew into a large compound and became one of the most important Dutch trading centres in Asia. To show their newfound power, they built a large stone warehouse in Dutch style in 1639. It is said to have been the first western building in Japan. The christian year 1639 on the gable was given as the reason for the demolition order of the Japanese government. This warehouse, symbol of the prosperity of Hirado during the days of international trade with the west, was carefully reconstructed in 2011 and now houses a nice museum on the international trade in the 17th century. All displays in the permanent exhibition have English explanations.

Tabira Insect Park

In Tabira Insect Park an environment has been created as Japanese people would imagine a typical mountain countryside setting with rice paddies, a small river, a pond, grass fields and a heterogeneous forest. In this environment you can freely observe insects in their natural habitat.

Unlike most other parks, no animals or insects have been imported into the boundaries of the park. As the newly created environment grew more mature and more rich in its diversity, more and more species have found their place in this park. One can now admire more than 3000 types of insects that have always lived in Tabira and the surrounding area. Since insects are hard to spot, guides tour visitors around the park day in, day out. You can observe insects all year round and with the help of the guides you can probably spot 40-60 different kinds in one hour. Tours are only available in Japanese.

KONOURA VILLAGE

Konoura village on Oshima Island is a nationally designated area of traditional buildings breathing a special atmosphere that is reminiscent of old traditional Japan. Considering this original traditional streetscape is rarely seen these days, it has attracted more attention in recent years but is still one of the least visited places in Japan. Stroll the small streets and discover some shrines and temples that can be accessed by the steep stone steps leading up the hills. The streets are rather empty and you need to bring your own lunch. This is the perfect place to get away from it all.

TEMPLES & SHRINES

KAMEOKA-JINJA SHRINE

Hirado City Centre

The buildings date from 1880 when four shrines that were located on the Hirado Castle grounds were merged together into Kameoka-jinja Shrine. Its stage is the main site of the Hirado Okunchi festival that takes places in October. Kameoka-jinja Shrine is the main shrine in Hirado and strongly associated with the Matsura family, the former rulers of the Hirado area. Look out for the huge Maki trees and sakura in Kameoka Park.

SAIKYO-JI TEMPLE

Hirado City Centre

At the southern end of Hirado City Centre you can find the brightly coloured pagoda of Saikyô-ji Temple. It is also known as Kôya-san Of The West as it is one of the main religious centres connected with Kûkai in western Kyushu. Saikyô-ji Temple has got one of the best art collections among the temples in Kyushu and there are nice views from the top of the striking red pagoda. The extensive grounds make for a pleasant stroll.

KOMYO-JI TEMPLE

Hirado City Centre

Komyo-ji Temple is the upper temple out of the two temples that make up the famous view of both temples and a church. The temple was founded in 1595 but the current Gate, Bell Tower and Main Hall were built from 1845 till 1865. They are listed cultural heritage buildings of Hirado city. The view from the alley leading up the mountain with the spire of the Catholic Church in the background is arguably the best known view of Hirado.

YUKO-JI TEMPLE

North of Hirado City Centre

Kôgetsu-an Temple was relocated from Oshima in 1695 by the 30th feudal lord of the Matsura clan, Takashi (Yûkô) to its current location and was renamed to Shunrinzan Yûkô-ji Temple. It is especially known for the red Kaizan-dô Hall, an Important Tangible Cultural Property built in 1696. You can access this temple by walking up the flight of stairs that lead all the way up from the coastline from the Kaijo Hotel parking lot.

FUMON-JI TEMPLE

Southern Hirado Island

Fumon-ji Temple in Kigatsu Town is the old site of the Ryûzui-ji Temple from where you can look out over Kigatsu Bay. There’s a quiet peaceful atmosphere and a charming garden with many lanterns in the temple grounds that you can explore. It is mostly known for the Keishuku-dô Hall, also known as the Ippon-dô Hall, One-Tree Hall, since it is built from one giant cedar that was once planted by the lord of Hirado.

DAIGYORAN KANNON STATUE

Ikitsuki Island

This large Kannon statue is the largest bronze statue in Japan with a height of 18 metres and weighing around 150 ton. It sits on a 3 metre high stone foundation and has a pearl of 2.5 centimetres attached on its brow. The Ikitsuki Daigyoran Kannon prays for world peace and the safety of those that are out on the sea. It also mourns over all shipwrecked people and marine animals. You can access the shrine inside the base.

CHURCHES

HIRADO FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH

Hirado City Centre

This church was built in 1931 and has become one of Hirado`s most popular tourist spots, as it looks out over the town and the harbour. Formerly known as Hirado Church it was renamed St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church in 1971 to honour the Xavier's visit to Hirado in 1550. Although parking is available, it is recomended to walk the small path up the hill from where you have a beautiful view of both temples and this church.

TABIRA CHURCH

Tabira Area

Tabira Church was designed by Tetsukawa Yosuke, a famous architect of many churches around Nagasaki Prefecture, who called it one of his best works. Built between December 1915 and October 1917 by the local Catholic community themselves, it was one of the last red-brick churches built in Nagasaki Prefecture. This graceful church with a beautiful interior was designated as a national important cultural property in 2003.

HOKI CHURCH

Central Hirado Island

This church, built in 1898, is the oldest church building in Hirado and is special in its architecture. The front facade is made from redbrick while the main body of the church is constructed from wood. The ceiling uses a ribbed vault technique. This lovely small church has a very serene atmosphere making it one of the most beautiful churches in Hirado. There are nice views of the coast from the parking lot.

HIMOSASHI CHURCH

Central Hirado Island

Himosashi Church is the largest church in Hirado with high ceilings and a Romanesque design. It towers high above the surrounding Himosashi village. The beautiful stained glass windows were installed at the time the church was built in 1929 and have remained intact to this day. It was designed by Tetsukawa Yosuke and features flower patterned decorations which is characteristic for his style.

YAMADA CHURCH

Ikitsuki Island

This small church on Ikitsuki Island was built in 1912 by architect Tetsukawa Yosuke. The front part of the church was extended in 1970. The outside is very simple, but the main draw is inside. There is also a wall painting of the seven sacraments made with the wings of over 30.000 butterflies.

KIGATSU CHURCH

Southern Hirado Island

Kigatsu Church is not a tourist spot, but there is something charming about this simple church. The building is an old wooden gymnasium of a High School. It was donated to the Christian community in 1962 and turned into a church. The paintings of the 14 Stations of the Cross are painted by famous Nagasaki a-bomb survivor and radiologist/writer Takashi Nagai. Often the church is closed.

NISHIHAMA BEACH

The sea is very quiet at this small local beach since it is located in a small inlet. A little rocky island with a little shrine on it sits right in front of the beach, connected to the road by a little walkway. Behind this, the beach looks out over the mountain Tsubute Rock, a protected part of Saikai National Park. The beach is not very big which gives it the feel of a private beach. There are no facilities and not often used as a bathing beach, even by local people.

HIRADO BRIDGE BEACH

Do not swim at this beach due to sea currents. For those who do not have own transport and find Senrigahama Beach too far, this small beach is a decent option from Hirado City Centre. You could even cycle here with an electrical assisted bike. The park has a lawn and a large playground for kids. You can enter the water and bathe safely but don't swim beyond where you can stand, since the currents and heavy sea traffic of the Hirado Strait are very dangerous.
